Monday, 17 August 2020 10:02 GMT

Fans will have to wait another year to enjoy WorldSBK action in Catalonia, with health and safety the top priority in 2020

Event manager Gemocat, together with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Dorna WSBK Organization, announce that the first edition of the Catalunya WorldSBK Round will be held without public on the 18th, 19th and 20th of September. Due to current health situation and in order to guarantee the safety of the competitors and the fans, the decision made has been made with all parties in mind. The relevant health protocols will be applied to all the professionals coming to the track during the entire weekend.

Also, the organisers have already contacted the 2020 ticketholders in order to make sure that their tickets can be used for the Catalunya WorldSBK Round 2021, which will take place on the 17th, 18th and 19th of September next year (dates to be FIM approved), or to refund the paid amount.

The organisers deeply regret the current situation and that they won’t be able to enjoy the company of the fans in the debut of the Superbike World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. All parties involved are committed to bringing an even better show for the 2021 event, welcoming fans back for exciting action.

Josep Lluis Santamaria, General Manager of the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit: "Taking into account the current global situation, we’ve found ourselves obliged to make this decision together with the sponsors, always prioritising the health and safety of all. As soon as is its opportune health wise to hold races with spectators, we will open the doors to the track to continue to enjoy the competition at our installations”.

Gregorio Lavilla, Executive Director, Sporting and Organisation departments: “It is sad that the first ever Catalunya WorldSBK Round will be held without fans. However, during these uncertain times, all measures must be taken to keep the health and safety of our competitors, staff and, of course, the fans, as a priority. We hope that very soon, we can welcome the passionate WorldSBK fans back trackside.”

Bernie Faus, General Manager of Gemocat: “In spite of all the effort and enthusiasm put into making the first edition of the Acerbis Catalunya Round a reality, from Gemocat – together with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Dorna – we didn’t hesitate for a second when making the decision to race behind closed doors in order to ensure the safety of the public and the participants. As for us, we have already started to work on the event of 2021. We’d like to thank all the work and collaboration of the Circuit and Dorna during this period, as well as to thank all the fans that also wanted to see the 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship live at Montmelo. We’ll be expecting you in September 2021!”
